Description
The Grade 8 English Language Arts curriculum at Montague Township School addresses reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language skills through seven student-centered units spanning the full academic year. Each unit integrates literature and informational texts with targeted writing assignments and discussion-based learning. The curriculum follows Understanding by Design principles, with each unit anchored to New Jersey Student Learning Standards and featuring mentor texts, formative assessments, and summative tasks. Students examine historical texts including the Declaration of Independence, speeches by Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr., the Gettysburg Address, narratives of enslaved individuals, and biographical accounts of freedom fighters. Students analyze how diverse cultures and historical periods shaped literature and understand the human experience through diverse perspectives. Students research significant historical events and develop multigenre essays exploring civil rights and social movements.
Students engage with digital platforms including HMH Ed Digital Platform, CommonLit, Newsela, Quill, and LinkIt to access and analyze texts. Students evaluate how technology influences society through readings about bionic enhancements, automation, and social media. Students use digital tools for research, writing, and presentation of findings.
Students examine career exploration through texts about future jobs and technology sectors. Students develop research and presentation skills applicable to professional contexts. Students consider how education and career paths align with personal goals through reading and discussion of contemporary social issues.
Students are assessed through a combination of formative and summative measures across all units. Formative assessments include class discussions, Socratic seminars, small group work, and daily writing activities that allow teachers to monitor understanding and adjust instruction. Each unit culminates in a summative assessment aligned to focus standards, typically requiring students to write essays (argumentative, informative, or narrative) or deliver presentations. Additionally, students complete HMH end-of-unit assessments and engage with NJSLA practice items in Unit 6 to prepare for state testing. Assessment types vary across units to measure reading comprehension, writing quality, speaking and listening skills, and language application.
