Description

Grade 5 mathematics focuses on three critical areas that build on prior knowledge and prepare students for higher mathematics. The first area develops fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators, and extends understanding to multiplication and division of fractions in limited cases. The second area extends division to two-digit divisors, integrates decimals into the place value system, and develops fluency with operations on decimals to hundredths. The third area develops understanding of volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space and relates volume to multiplication and addition. Students work with multiple representations including visual models, area models, and standard algorithms, connecting conceptual understanding to procedural fluency throughout the year.

Assessment is ongoing and multifaceted, incorporating formative and summative measures. Formative assessments include daily classwork, exit tickets, white boards, individual and group work, math journals, and quizzes that monitor student understanding and inform instruction. Summative assessments include chapter tests, end-of-unit tests, performance tasks, extended projects, and PARCC assessments. Benchmark assessments using Renaissance/STAR MAP and tools within adopted programs (Envision, Go Math, Eureka, iReady) are administered periodically to track progress toward grade-level standards. Alternative assessments and differentiated approaches accommodate diverse learners.
