Description
Grade 2 mathematics focuses on four critical areas aligned with Common Core State Standards. Students extend their understanding of base-ten notation, recognizing that digits in each place represent amounts of hundreds, tens, or ones, and can count by fives, tens, and hundreds up to 1000. They build fluency with addition and subtraction within 100 and apply these operations to solve word problems within 1000 using place value and properties of operations. Students recognize the need for standard units of measure, use rulers and measurement tools to understand that smaller units require more iterations, and relate addition and subtraction to length. They describe and analyze shapes by examining sides and angles, decompose and combine shapes, and develop foundations for understanding area, volume, congruence, similarity, and symmetry. All instruction integrates the eight Mathematical Practices throughout lessons.

Standards for Mathematical Practice
Students connect everyday vocabulary to strengthen understanding of mathematical terms through conversations and reading. Students utilize reading comprehension skills by acting out or drawing the order of important events in story problems. Students read and write stories to represent addition and subtraction, create mathematical stories using numbers, pictures and words, and participate in interactive student notebooks and read-alouds.
Students work with data and make calculations involving measurements and other data across all units. Students practice data collection, organization, and analysis as part of scientific inquiry.
Students connect money as a means for helping people buy things they need or want. Students complete independent and partner projects to plan and market a good or service, connecting mathematics to economics and financial literacy.
Assessment occurs throughout the year using formative, summative, and benchmark measures. Formative assessments include classwork, exit tickets, whiteboards, individual and group work, math journals, peer discussions, quick checks, and enrichment tasks. Summative assessments consist of chapter tests, fact quizzes, performance tasks, and extended projects tied to student growth objectives. Benchmark assessments include Renaissance/STAR testing, Map Testing, DRA, and tests within adoption materials. Teachers use released item sets, state testing results, and teacher-created assessments to monitor progress and inform instruction.
